The project
Frankly is a website and mobile application with interfaces for educators and students to facilitate healthy, inclusive, dynamic, and enjoyable sex education in the classroom. This project was created on a collaborative team within the User Experience Design course at MassArt.
The problem
Our team began the project by engaging in a q-burst to identify a problem that needed to be solved. We crafted the problem statement, "How can we make sex education inclusive, dynamic, and not disruptive to learning?"
The research
We conducted extensive research on sex education, including investigating state requirements and inclusive curriculum data. We also conducted a survey, which included over 110 participants across the country to gather insights on sex education experiences.
The insights
Mandatory holistic, intersectional, and accurate sex education should be taught throughout schooling, starting from a young age.
To build open, accepting, and positive communities, conversations around gender identity, sexuality, and healthy relationships must be destigmatized at school and home.
Sex education instructors must actively include and address the needs of students who are queer, trans, nonbinary, disabled, Black, Indigenous, people of color, immigrants, and other marginalized communities.
Information on gender and sexuality should be presented in a way that is frank and trustworthy while remaining enjoyable and relatable for students.
Sex education is taught by many types of educators, including school nurses, gym teachers, health teachers, science teachers, and religious leaders. They have varying experience with and expertise in sex education.

Analysis
We identified a gap in the market, teachers are never the target audience of these apps, even though in our survey, we found that 80% of people want to learn their gender and sexuality education from school.
